What Is Publishing?
Many people confuse publishing with printing. Publishing itself is a very complex process
of:
Taking a raw idea
Helping the author turn it into a polished manuscript
Creating an interior design that enhances the book and the ideas it is presenting
Designing a cover that through its copy and visual presentation draws the target audience to the book
Finding the best printer for the job at the best price
Marketing the book and its author
Working with distributors and wholesalers to get the book to the booksellers
Doing order fulfillment
Tracking how the book is doing, and finally,
Ensuring that the author is paid their royalties
All of this takes between 18 and 36 months!
Another way to see what publishing is all about is to recognize that it utilizes five
different systems, all of which are industries in and of themselves.
There is the creative development of the idea into a full manuscript; the end-product
production including the graphic design of the interior and exterior of the book; the
distribution/fulfillment of the business; the marketing of the book; and the financial
resources that make it all possible.

As can be imagined, publishing is a work-intensive business. Each manuscript which a publisher
accepts for publication requires an enormous output on the publisher's part in man-hours,
expertise and money. Publishers must do their very best to pick manuscripts which will
repay all these expenses, replenish the author's resources, and replenish the company's financial
coffers and its personnel through the book's success.
