Understanding Book Proposals From the Publisher's Point of View
This could also be entitled, "What Publishers Wish Authors Knew"....
Publishers are basically venture capitalists for authors.
When beginning the task of putting together a proposal package for a publisher, keep in the
forefront of your mind that publishers view your book proposal very similarly to how a
venture capitalist views a business plan, or a banker views a loan proposal. You are asking
us to risk our money, time, and the resources of our company on your book.
Publishing is first and foremost a
business.
We are by definition interested in the profitability of every book we undertake. This
is even more important to publishers, as opposed to some other businesses, because
each book takes so much time and effort. Losses are not minor when we have given one and a half
to three years of business resources to the project; we cannot afford to make mistakes.
Prove to us that your idea will sell. Prove to us that there are enough people out
there who want your book, who need your solution; prove to us that they cannot find a
better solution to their problem....And show us that you know how to reach those people so we
can tell them about your solution (book).
